And if I can keep figuring out other ways to flip his movies, I'll continue to do it. That was themed off a Stanley Kubrick film, A Clockwork Orange. Our last project was Clockwork Indigo, which we did with Underachievers. It was ahead of its time, and this is ahead of its time.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the best films ever made. How did you conceive the title, 3001: A Laced Odyssey? All of the songs sound like they're supposed to. I'm surprised they still like us.ĮE: I think as rappers, for sure. I've never bought anything I haven't seen or heard before.ĭo you think that's because you generated that anticipation? Some people hadn't even heard the album yet but they were buying it. MD: It's good to also know that your fans really love you and will support you. But before that whole whirlwind of activity kicked off, we sat down with the guys to talk about their music, how the group has grown in the last three years, and why they dig everything from designer fashion to flannel shirts from Sears. They performed "Bounce" on The Tonight Show last week and recently wrapped up a sold-out, two-night homecoming stand at New York's Webster Hall. and 2013's Better Off Dead (not to mention Clockwork Indigo, made in collaboration with fellow Brooklynites The Underachievers).įlatbush Zombies are currently in the midst of world tour to support 3001. Walking a fine line between darkness and light, it's a very strong follow-up to the mixtapes it follows: 2012's D.R.U.G.S. Produced by Elliott, the album is a lush, layered piece of art bolstered by skillful wordplay from each lyricist. But dismissing Meechy and his cohorts, Zombie Juice and Erick "The Architect" Elliott, as acid-obsessed dudes from Brooklyn is to do them a disservice-and yourself. That's not to say that 3001: A Laced Odyssey doesn't possess its share of talk about psychotropic substances it does. For a band so often pigeonholed as "drug rap," these guys know their shit when it comes to style. "YSL pants with the zippers, yikes," spits Meechy Darko in the opening of "Bounce," dropping a Bathing Ape callout a moment later.

Still, there's something remarkable about the fact that the first line of the first single from the Flatbush Zombies' debut album is a reference to Saint Laurent. ¸¸.Fashion callouts aren't exactly rare in the hip-hop world. That's not enough for you? They also have some more relaxing songs such as the greatly executed 'Crown', the solo track by Erick Arc Elliott known as '222', and the two set-piece like songs 'Fly Away' and 'Smoke Interlude' which are both beautiful songs as 'Fly Away' shows Meechy Darko showing a bit of soul in his music whereas 'Smoke Interlude' is a more upbeat yet relaxed track from Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott. They also have some harder hitting material as well, such as 'God Bless The Dead', 'Facts', 'HELL-O', 'Headstone', 'R.I.P.C.D', and 'Your Favorite Rap Song', just to name a few. For a few examples, 'YouAreMySunshine' is a Meechy Darko solo song talking about the loss of his friend A$AP Yams, then the song 'U&I' is a song with all 3 members talking about family and how they love each other as brothers, 'The Glory' is another great song about personal things to each member as well as the featured artist, Denzel Curry. If they wanna make a more personal type of song they will do so, and they'll make it sound good. However, trippy horror rap isn't the only thing they do well, as the group do pretty much whatever they want. The Flatbush Zombies can fuse horror themed lyrics and psychedelic hip-hop elements together really well and I find that to be a pretty unique blend of music as I enjoy both horror related music and psychedelic music on their own, but when they're fused together it's on another level. Wether it's Erick Arc Elliott really focusing on the way he crafts the beats the group uses or the impressive improvement as a lyricist (also from Erick Arc Elliott), Zombie Juice actually paying attention to their earlier music and using that to help him improve upon his flows, and even Meechy Darko giving even harder hitting verses, The Flatbush Zombies really care about their craft musically.

Not saying they're the only musical act who actually makes music that doesn't sound the same every time, but they're one of my favorite and the whole point of this post is to talk about why I love the group, just making that clear before somebody gets mad at that statement. Other than subject matter, none of the group's songs really sound the same, and the fact that I have to say that's a positive is kinda sad but at least it helps the group stand out more. While they probably care about the money too, the Flatbush Zombies seem to actually care about the music they make more.
